Pierre Kauffmann, born in Lorraine (North-East France) in 1953, started learning the fine Art of Sculpture at the age of 17 years old, following his grandfather’s example. The discovery of different sculpting techniques, styles and workshops enabled him to relate to his Masters’ interrogations regarding the science of stucco in South Italy with Master Pèpe, the science of wood carving in the French area of The Vosges, or the timeless dizziness experienced when working with Carrara marble with Master Vallat in Southern France. As Pierre Kauffman roamed through Europe in search of answers to his artistic interrogations and to verify the different sculpting techniques, he eventually came full circle when his path collided with that of Master Mainponte, born at the beginning of the twentieth century and heir of Garnier (Opera of Paris).
After founding several workshops, he decided to settle in Bordeaux, France, where he has been living and working for more than twenty years. Currently, with over 35 years of experience and expertise, he keeps visiting more than ever all the fields that his discipline entails – whether it be as an ornament maker, or as a statuary and portrait maker. More importantly, he has been endlessly exploring a field which he likes to define as “Expression Work,”… There lies the artist’s interrogations which, when combined with research and experimentation, produce in the end what one could call the “Unexpected.” And after all, we could wonder if that is not what the meaningful and fundamental multi-dimensional scope of his work, as an artist, is all about!
